What is Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive weight loss procedure in which the outer portion of the stomach is removed to limit food intake. This allows patients to feel full after eating smaller amounts, thereby reducing calorie consumption. It is considered a relatively simpler bariatric surgery as it does not involve rerouting of the intestines. Additionally, there is no use of an implantable band, which lowers the overall surgical risk.

Process of Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • The procedure begins with the administration of general anesthesia.
  • The surgeon makes 5–6 small incisions in the abdomen.
  • Surgical instruments along with a laparoscope (camera) are inserted to view and perform the surgery.
  • A tube is passed through the esophagus into the stomach to guide the procedure.
  • A stapling device is used to cut and seal the stomach along its length.
  • Approximately 75% of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a narrow gastric tube or “sleeve.”
  • No part of the intestine is removed or bypassed.
  • The entire procedure usually takes around 1–2 hours to complete.
