What is Sleeve Gastrectomy

It is a restrictive weight loss procedure in which the outer margin of the stomach is removed to restrict food intake allows the patient to feel full after eating less and taking in fewer calories. It is a relatively easier weight loss operation because it does not involve rerouting of the intestines. There is no implantable band device which means that surgical risk is lower.

In this procedure, you are administered general anesthesia. 5 to 6 small cuts are made in the abdomen. The surgeon will insert surgical instruments along with a telescope so that they can see inside of the abdomen and perform the operation. A tube is then passed down the esophagus and into your stomach. This tube will guide the surgeon while a stapling device is used to cut and seal your stomach.

75 percent of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric tube or a sleeve. No intestines are removed or bypassed during this procedure. It takes around one to two hours to complete.
