It is a gold standard weight loss surgery which makes the stomach smaller and reroutes the intestines. It is also known as “Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass” (RYGB). When the patient has undergone this procedure, they will feel full sooner while eating less food. There is 67 percent weight loss over the period of 2 years if the instructions are followed. It also cures or improves diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension among other diseases. Anyone having Body Mass Index of over 30 can undergo Laparoscopic Gastric Banding.
In this procedure, anesthesia is first given to the patient. Five to six small incisions are made in the abdomen through which a small scope is connected to a video camera and surgical tools are inserted. The top portion of the stomach is stapled so it separated from the bottom to create a small stomach pouch. The food intake is restricted by this small pouch. Jejunum, a small section of the small intestine, is then attached to the small stomach pouch and the food is bypassed.
It is critical to profoundly understand what really matters to patients when it comes to disease management and treatment expectations.
