Cancer Surgeon

Expert Diagnosis, Personalised Treatment & Advanced Surgical Care at CUSP Group of Surgeons

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious cancers worldwide. It develops when abnormal cells in the lungs grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour that can interfere with normal breathing and spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. While smoking remains the leading risk factor, lung cancer can also occur in non-smokers due to genetic, environmental, and occupational factors. Early diagnosis and timely treatment significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival.

CUSP Surgeons, is a team of highly experienced and skilled surgeons dedicated to delivering advanced surgical care with precision, safety, and compassion for cervical  cancer. We offer personalised treatment plans developed by a multidisciplinary team, combining advanced diagnostics, minimally invasive and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy to ensure the best possible outcomes for every patient.

What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer occurs when cells within the lungs undergo abnormal changes and begin multiplying uncontrollably. Over time, these cells form a tumour that can affect lung function and, if untreated, spread to nearby lymph nodes or distant organs.

The two main types of lung cancer are:

  • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer accounts for nearly 85% of all lung cancer cases. It generally grows more slowly than small cell lung cancer and is often treated with surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these treatments depending on the stage of the disease.
  • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): Small Cell Lung Cancer is less common but tends to grow and spread rapidly. Treatment usually involves chemotherapy and radiation therapy, although surgery may be considered in carefully selected early-stage cases.

Advances in imaging, molecular testing, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery have greatly improved the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, allowing many patients to achieve better long-term outcomes.

What Causes Lung Cancer?

Although smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, many individuals diagnosed with the disease have never smoked. Several environmental, occupational, and genetic factors can contribute to the development of lung cancer.

Common risk factors include:

  • Cigarette, cigar, or pipe smoking
  • Exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Radon gas exposure
  • Air pollution
  • Occupational exposure to asbestos, silica, or industrial chemicals
  • Family history of lung cancer
  • Previous radiation therapy to the chest
  • Increasing age

While these risk factors increase the likelihood of developing lung cancer, not everyone with these factors will develop the disease. Regular medical evaluation is important for individuals at higher risk.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Lung cancer often causes few or no symptoms in its early stages, making it difficult to detect without appropriate screening or imaging. When diagnosed early, treatment is generally more effective and may allow complete surgical removal of the tumour before it spreads.

Individuals with persistent respiratory symptoms, a history of smoking, or significant risk factors should seek timely medical evaluation. Early diagnosis can improve survival rates and expand the range of available treatment options.

What are the Symptoms of Lung Cancer?

The symptoms of lung cancer vary depending on the size and location of the tumour. Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent cough that does not improve
  • Coughing up blood (haemoptysis)
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Recurrent chest infections
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Persistent fatigue

Symptoms that persist for several weeks or worsen over time should be evaluated by a specialist.

How is Lung Cancer Diagnosed?

Accurate diagnosis and staging are essential for planning the most effective treatment. At CUSP Group of Surgeons, diagnosis begins with a detailed clinical assessment followed by advanced imaging and specialised investigations to determine the type, size, and extent of the tumour.

Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Chest X-ray: Often the first investigation used to identify abnormalities within the lungs.
  • CT Scan: Provides detailed images of the lungs and helps determine the size and location of the tumour.
  • PET-CT Scan: Detects whether the cancer has spread to lymph nodes or other organs.
  • Bronchoscopy: A flexible camera is passed through the airways to examine the lungs and obtain tissue samples.
  • Lung Biopsy: Confirms the diagnosis by examining tumour tissue under a microscope.
  • Pulmonary Function Tests: Assess lung capacity and determine whether surgery can be safely performed.

Early and accurate diagnosis enables personalised treatment planning and improves clinical outcomes.

Treatment Options for Lung Cancer

Treatment for lung cancer depends on several factors, including the type of lung cancer, its stage, tumour size and location, overall lung function, and the patient’s general health. At CUSP Group of Surgeons, every treatment plan is developed through a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, and pathologists to ensure personalised, evidence-based care.

  1. Surgery

Surgery is often the preferred treatment for patients with early-stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and offers the best chance of long-term cure when the cancer is confined to the lung.

  • Lobectomy: A lobectomy is the most commonly performed surgery for lung cancer. During this procedure, the affected lobe of the lung is removed along with nearby lymph nodes to ensure complete cancer clearance. It is considered the standard surgical treatment for most early-stage lung cancers.
  • Segmentectomy or Wedge Resection: For selected patients with very small tumours or those with reduced lung function, a segmentectomy or wedge resection may be recommended. These procedures remove only the cancerous portion of the lung while preserving as much healthy lung tissue as possible.
  • Pneumonectomy: In cases where the tumour involves a large portion of the lung or major airways, a pneumonectomy may be necessary. This procedure involves removing the entire affected lung and is recommended only when required to achieve complete tumour removal.
  1. Robotic & Minimally Invasive Lung Surgery (VATS)

Whenever appropriate, Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) or robotic-assisted thoracic surgery may be recommended. These advanced minimally invasive techniques utilise small incisions, specialised instruments, and high-definition visualisation, allowing surgeons to perform complex lung cancer procedures with exceptional precision.

Potential benefits include:

  • Smaller incisions with minimal scarring
  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery and earlier return to daily activities

The choice of surgical approach is individualised based on the tumour, patient health, and current evidence-based treatment guidelines.

  1. Chemotherapy

It may be recommended:

  • Before surgery (Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy): To shrink the tumour and improve the chances of complete surgical removal.
  • After surgery (Adjuvant Chemotherapy): To reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
  • As the primary treatment for advanced or metastatic lung cancer.
  • In combination with radiation therapy for selected patients.

Treatment plans are personalised to maximise effectiveness while carefully managing potential side effects.

  1. Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.

It may be recommended:

  • Along with chemotherapy for locally advanced lung cancer.
  • After surgery in selected patients.
  • For patients who are not suitable candidates for surgery.
  • To relieve symptoms such as pain, bleeding, or airway obstruction in advanced disease.

Modern radiation techniques allow highly precise treatment delivery while minimising damage to healthy lung tissue.

  1. Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy is designed for patients whose tumours have specific genetic mutations. These medicines block the molecular pathways that allow cancer cells to grow and spread while causing less damage to normal cells.

Molecular testing helps determine whether a patient is suitable for targeted therapy, making treatment more personalised and effective.

  1. Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy helps the body’s immune system recognise and attack cancer cells more effectively. It has become an important treatment option for many patients with advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and may be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy depending on the characteristics of the tumour.

Treatment recommendations are based on detailed molecular testing and internationally accepted clinical guidelines.

Follow-up Care & Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Regular follow-up is an essential part of lung cancer care. After treatment, patients require periodic clinical evaluations and imaging studies to monitor recovery, assess lung function, and detect any recurrence at an early stage.

At CUSP, follow-up care extends beyond cancer treatment. Our multidisciplinary team provides guidance on pulmonary rehabilitation, breathing exercises, smoking cessation, nutritional support, and lifestyle modifications to help patients recover safely, improve lung function, and maintain their quality of life.
