Laparoscopic surgery can be defined as a surgery that uses smaller cuts which leads to reduced blood loss, tissue damage, hospital stay and faster recovery. Unlike traditional surgery, this procedure makes the medical experience convenient for both the doctor and the patient. As the name suggests, it involves the use of a slender tool that has a tiny video camera and light on the end. Being minimally invasive in nature, it was earlier performed for gynaecologic and gall bladder surgeries. But over the last 10 years, the use of this technique has expanded into intestinal surgery.
Unlike the traditional surgery in which surgeons make a single incision to enter the abdomen, laparoscopic surgeons in Delhi make several incisions of 0.5 cm to 1 cm, and each of them is called a “port.”
Process of laparoscopic surgery
This highly advanced procedure make the surgeons see the internal part of the abdomen in real-time. When they insert the laparoscope through a small incision, this facilitates them to see the images at a video monitor which allows utmost precision, accuracy and safety. A lot of people prefer to get treated in laparoscopic surgery centres in Delhi as these centres offer a specialised treatment by an expert team of doctors.
Why the use of laparoscopic surgery?
Best surgeons use this surgical procedure as a last resort when other non-invasive methods are unable to help with diagnosis. The procedure is generally used to identify and diagnose the source of pelvic or abdominal pain. CT scan, MRI and ultrasound are also performed in many cases of abdominal problems but when all these fail and are unable to give the desired information for a diagnosis then the laparoscopic procedure is used.
What does laparoscopy examine?
Below is the list of organs examined by laparoscopic means:
- Appendix
- Gallbladder
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Small intestine and large intestine (colon)
- Spleen
- Stomach
- Pelvic or reproductive organs
After observing these organs, the surgeon can detect the following:
- An abdominal mass or tumour
- Fluid in the abdominal cavity
- Liver disease
- The effectiveness of certain treatments
Advantages of laparoscopic surgery
Being minimally invasive in nature, laparoscopic surgery entails certain benefits which make the medical experience convenient for both the doctor and patient.
- Small cuts, fewer scars
Incisions not more than half a centimeter will not only produce fewer scars but also lead to reduced blood loss and tissue damage. Thus, leading to a faster recovery.
- Less hospital stay
When you experience less pain along with less tissue damage then your recovery would be faster. This facilitates you with a reduced hospital stay. In the traditional method, it takes a week or more to get discharged and approximately 4 to 8 weeks for proper and complete healing. On the other hand, when you undergo laparoscopic surgery merely two nights are required for observation in a hospital and completely recovery happens in 2 or 3 weeks.
- Back to normal life
Due to the above-mentioned advantages, one can resume his/her normal life within a couple of weeks. Though initially, some precautionary measures are needed to be followed but they are always less than that followed after traditional surgery.
Advanced kinds of laparoscopic surgeries
In this, the procedure is a little different from a simple laparoscopic surgery. Being highly advanced in nature, here the surgeon can put the camera and the surgical tool through the same opening in the skin. This means less scarring. But it’s trickier for the surgeon because the instruments are so close together. In other cases, the surgeon may involve the use of a device that lets them reach in with a hand. This is called “hand assisted” laparoscopy. The cut in the skin has to be longer than a half-inch, but it still can be smaller than in traditional surgery. Many laparoscopic surgery hospitals in India follow the procedure to give the desired results to the patients.
