Cancer Surgeon

We, here at CUSP are equipped with the technologically updated faculty for a range of advanced medical treatments. Our unit offering VATS treatment in India is headed by professionally experienced and intensively trained surgeons. The leading surgeons are assisted by a varied staff comprising of lab technicians, physicians, dieticians, physical therapists, and nurses. Enabling the advantages of technology with efficient traditional recovery patterns, we establish a perfect integration of science with experience. We have mentioned some Frequently Asked Questions to highlight the important aspects related to VATS in detail.

VATS is a modern surgical procedure, how is it effective over other traditional surgeries?

VATS which stands for ‘video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery’ is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) approach to provide treatment for problems with the thorax. The methodology for performing VATS allows a clear view of the thorax which was not possible with the traditional forms of a formal thoracotomy incision. A patient operated with VATS observes less scarring, less pain, shorter stay at the hospital, less postoperative morbidity, and quick recovery.

If VATS is performed as part of the diagnosis for biopsy, what is the plan for treatment of the evaluated condition?

VATS for biopsy of chest cancers helps in identifying the cause and extent of the chest cancer. After the biopsy is complete, the doctors can follow up with a surgical approach to treat the evaluated condition.

For what conditions is VATS performed?

Treatment related to pulmonary, mediastinal, and pleural pathology uses VATS. VATS serve various purposes both for diagnosis and treatment. The following are some of the conditions/ surgeries done by VATS:

  • Biopsy
  • Congenital problems of the chest wall
  • Diagnosis of chest cancers
  • Esophagectomy
  • Excessive sweating
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Hernia of the diaphragm
  • Hiatal hernia repair
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Lung surgery
  • Lung volume reduction surgery
  • Paralysis of the diaphragm
  • Repetitive pleural effusions
  • Thymectomy

What is the procedure of performing VATS?

VATS is performed in a step-by-step procedure with a set standard. The procedure follows the below-mentioned steps:

  • The patient is made to fall asleep by administering general anesthesia through an intravenous line.
  • A breathing tube is guided down the throat of the patient into their trachea. Through this breathing tube, oxygen is provided to their lungs until the operation is complete.
  • After this, small incisions are made into the chest to act as access points for specially designed surgical instruments and a thoracoscope (a tiny camera).
  • The thoracoscope provides the internal view of the chest. This guides the surgeon to operate clearly.

Is VATS a time-exhausting procedure when it is performed for surgical intervention?

Unlike formal thoracotomy procedures, VATS do not require long hours of surgical interventions to reach successful results. Instead, the operation lasts for maximum up to two hours on an average basis.

What risks can be observed by a patient who undergoes VATS?

Air leak, allergic reaction to anesthesia, atelectasis, bleeding, blood clot, empyema, fever, heart arrhythmias, infections, nerve damage, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, and shock can be experienced after VATS. Certain preventive measures such as a pre-anesthetic assessment, prescription of antibiotics, and strict regulation to rehabilitation program can help in minimizing the risks of complications and side-effects after the operation.

Here at CUSP, the unit of VATS treatment offers a pioneering section with progressive services led by white-collar experienced surgeons. All the surgeons here at CUSP are strategically distributed in all our units be it the VAT treatment in Delhi or any other likely surgical interventions. The cross-fertilization of various upgraded techniques creates futuristic possibilities of successful outcomes for all our patients. Here at CUSP, we guarantee the right approach with proper evaluation of the patient’s condition collaborated with expert’s advice.
