WHAT IS PEPTIC STRICTURE?

The damage caused to the lining of the oesophagus (the tube that connects the mouth and the stomach) over time may lead to narrowing of the oesophagus and this condition is termed as a peptic stricture. It is a non-cancerous condition that starts due to the formation of strictures, which are build of fibrous tissue and collagen deposits in the oesophagus due to ulcers or chronic inflammation.

A patient with strictures will experience inflammation which causes scarring in the oesophagus and notices difficulty in swallowing, with food “sticking.”

SYMPTOMS OF PEPTIC STRICTURE

People suffering from peptic stricture may experience the following signs and symptoms:

  • Difficulty in swallowing or becoming painful (dysphagia)
  • Refluxing of food into the mouth from the stomach
  • Heartburn
  • Chest pain
  • A feeling of food stuck in the throat
  • Frequent hiccupping or burping
  • Coughing or choking
  • Dehydration or malnutrition
  • Drooling
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Regurgitation of food

CAUSES OF PEPTIC STRICTURE

According to the doctors, the most common causes of peptic stricture are:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), one of the most common causes
  • Swallowing of substances like dyes, household cleaners, disc batteries, or battery acid that may harm the lining of the oesophagus
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Injuries caused by an endoscope or endoscopic procedure
  • Long-term use of a nasogastric (NG) tube
  • Treatment of oesophageal varices

DIAGNOSING PEPTIC STRICTURE

The common tests used at the hospital to diagnose and evaluate Peptic Oesophageal Stricture include:

  • Barium Swallow: It is a form of an X-ray that helps the doctors to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. This is done using a barium swallow method, where a patient drinks the barium solution to give a detail inside of the digestive system.
  • Endoscopy: In this process, an endoscope (flexible, narrow tube) is passed into the oesophagus and the inside image of the oesophagus is projected onto a screen and a doctor determines the presence of any tumours or abnormalities.
  • Oesophagal Manometry: It is a test performed to measure the rhythmic muscle contractions happening in the oesophagus when a patient swallows food. The test helps in measuring the oesophagus’ muscle coordination.
  • Oesophagal Motility Test: This test helps in measuring the muscular strength and coordination and also helps in detecting the abnormality in the valve of the oesophagus. It is performed using a small tube that is inserted into the patient’s oesophagus through the nose. This tube has pressure-sensitive transducers attached to it that remains in the oesophagus after the removal of the tube and helps in performing the test.

TREATMENTS FOR PEPTIC STRICTURE

Our team of doctors offers the best Peptic Oesophageal Stricture Treatment in Delhi India. Some of the major treatment approaches we follow include:

Medication

Medication is one of the most effective and important parts of the treatment for peptic stricture. It involves the use of:

  • Medications that block the production of stomach acid and heal the oesophagus

Also known as Proton Pump Inhibitors these medicines are stronger than H-2-receptor blockers and helps in healing of the oesophagus. OTC Proton Pump Inhibitors are:

  • Lansoprazole (Prevacid 24 HR)
  • Omeprazole (Prilosec OTC, Zegerid OTC)

OTC medications

The doctor prescribes over-the-counter medicines that help in neutralising the acid in the stomach or reduce its production thereby helping in healing oesophagus. These medicines include:

  • Antacids to help neutralise the acid in the stomach
  • Mylanta
  • Rolaids
  • Tums

Oesophageal Dilation

Also termed as stretching, oesophageal dilation is one of the preferred treatment options. It involves the use of an endoscope to see the strictured area and place the place a dilator into the oesophagus under general sedation. This dilator is a long thin tube that has a balloon attached on its tip, which inflates and expands the narrowed area of the oesophagus. Thereby, helps in relieving from the symptoms of the disease.

Oesophageal Stent Placement

A stent is a tube that surgeons place inside the oesophagus to stop it from narrowing and keep it open. This will help in easy the symptoms of Peptic Stricture.

Surgery

Usually, Peptic Stricture can be treated with medication and surgery is rarely an option. However, during serious cases, a surgery called myotomy is performed when other methods fail to show results.
